Poetic verse inspired by "Interview with the Vampire" by Anne Rice

lyrics

From the Catacombs of My Darkest Mind

The Night draws herself up around me,
My cloak of darkness.
She is my master. I am her lover.
And together we waltz,
Locked in a danse macabre;
The Night and her creature
In a lover’s embrace.
And when the Night caresses me,
She arouses in me desire,
And with desire comes my thirst,
And I know what I need.
White skin and pseudoflesh
Yearning for a forbidden liquid
As red as the reddest rose,
And sweeter than the finest wine.
And as I lick my too-long canines
The human in me ceases to exist,
And I become an animal.
I know only the laws of the jungle:
Seek, find, stalk, kill!
I am a fox among the chickens,
My movements vulpine and my grin ghastly,
Eyes questing for my prey.
There! A thief in an alley,
A brother of sorts.
He knows the shadows of Night as I know them.
Poor, helpless mortal;
A short, sad life of pain and misery.
I will relieve him of his suffering:
And believe me, the kill brings pleasure
To the victim and hunter alike.
He will die happy.
So as the clock strikes twelve
I move in for the kill,
A predator as only a beast can be.
There is my victim, eyes bulging in terror,
Hands flailing helplessly.
My fangs come forward,
My lips pull back,
Saliva floods my mouth.
And all my senses perceive him:
My eyes mark his reactions
As if I were watching an insect.
I hear the brass sound of his screams
Echo in my ears.
Beneath my hands I feel
His desperate struggles and the pulse of his heart.
And the smell of his blood is in my nostrils –
The scent of it is so overwhelming,
So tangible I can taste it already –
And I want him.
I draw back his head,
And his pink throat . . .
So tantalizing, so desirable, conjuring my evil thirst.
And I drive my fangs in,
Then move my lips over the flow
And I start to suck at the wound.
Rapture! Ecstasy! Heaven!
I am in Eden!
I walk among the angels!
Our heartbeats thunder in my ears.
His blood flows from his veins and into mine,
Warming me,
Nourishing me,
Slaking my thirst.
In my triumph of glory I moan aloud,
And he weakens . . .
Weakens . . .
Dies.
I pull away slowly,
Reeling in rapture,
And the world is surreal, dreamlike, abstract.
My loins throb in the wake of my passion.
In an endless moment of self-indulgence
I lick my sharp teeth and
Blood-red lips,
And I smile.
Then suddenly, the beast within me
Returns to the shadows from
Whence it came;
From the catacombs of my darkest mind.
And the human emerges,
The human with his moral codes
And his concept of “society”.
He sees the victim lying in death.
He sees the marks his fangs have made.
He tastes red iron in his mouth.
And he screams.
And all the while the beast notices
A drop of blood trickling from the marks,
And it hungers for it.
My God, what have I done?
What have I done?
And I, too, return to the shadows,
Creeping like the guilty thing I am,
Just a face in the crowd
But forever sequestered from it.
